“Geeze, it sounds just like The Band” said my DJ partner when I played the first cut, “Smithville Blues”, on my weekly blues radio program. If I had played Amede, it would have brought a similar comment. Next we hear Zydeco, and five tracks into the disc we get a Doug Sahm Tex-Mex sound as The UpSouth Twisters cover the Freddie Fender favorite “Do You Ever Think Of Me?” On “If the Phone Don’t Ring” the vocals have a Mick Jagger quality.
“This is not a new band but a group of strong players who have been together for years under the name Lucky 7. The name change coincides with their first full-length recording in a decade. The band includes Kenny Margolis (accordion and keys), Billy Roues (guitar and mandolin), Steven ‘Muddy’ Roues (bass and harp), Boris Kinberg (rub board and percussion) and Bill Rankin (drums). Horns are provided by Erik Lawrence and Steven Bernstein of the Levon Helm Band. Margolis and the Roues Brothers share lead vocals and harmonies.
“The wide array of styles speaks to the Twisters impressive songwriting. Twelve of the thirteen tracks are originals, with a cover of the Boss’ “Valentine’s Day” originally released on a tribute called Light of Day. Several other tunes have landed in feature films, including the instrumental, “Holiday Depression”. Renowned Cajun artist Jo-El Sonnier helped write “Jolie Fi.” “It’s Cryin’ Shame” seems to come directly from the Fats Domino catalog, but with accordion instead of piano and raging harp in “I Wonder Why” will have you reaching for your dancing shoes. Play this at your summer parties and crank it up!”  Jim Hynes for Elmore Magazine (July 2008)

“This is the first album released by the band under the new name The Upsouth Twisters. To their fans, they are better known under their previous name of 'Lucky 7'. The band [is] comprised of 5 musicians who enhance every song on the album with their masterful playing. The Cajun and Zydeco styles have a distinct parts in the music of the band and other styles like rockabilly, blues, country, etc., entwine with it gracefully. This album shows musical maturity and has an outstanding quality to it. It will be loved by those who enjoy Cajun, Zydeco, and generally fans of musical styles encompassed by the Americana tag.”

“This group has a distinct Louisiana flavor with accordion and scrubboard, and have written most of the 13 songs here. – it seems serious effort was made to have every song quite different! Admirable versatility, excellent songwriting – this one should please anyone who enjoys the spectrum of Louisiana and that region’s sounds!” MB Blue Suede News

One Way Track LUCKY 7   Deluge/UpSouth Recordings 1994
“LUCKY 7 is a New York City-based band whose new album is deliciously steeped in a hillbilly-Zydeco-country-rock-and-roll gumbo. With a sack full of original tunes and a couple covers, their newest release on Deluge Records, "One Way Track" is guaranteed to transport you to the bayou and back…… Do yourself a favor. Get a copy of this CD and play it at your next party. It is flat out awesome.” Jamey Garner for www.coolcountrynyc.com

LUCKY 7 "One Way Track" (Deluge)    reviewed by Dave Larsen for Rockabilly Magazine April 2007 “
“Cajun accordion and infectious, insistent percussion cross with rakish, Memphis-via-NYC Rock’n’Roll guitar. As vividly and resoundingly alive as a French Quarter celebration. This (again available) 1994 disc includes Finn and the Sharks personnel Billy and Steven Roues and Kenny Margolis (Mink DeVille, Cracker).” Recommended Tracks "C'est Parti Mon Kiki," "Rosalie"

One Way Track by Lucky 7 on Deluge Records 1994
“Who thought an accordion could rock? Anyone who's heard Cracker play in the last few years! Kenny Margolis, the lead singer & accordion player of Lucky 7, has provided amazing accordion & keyboards for Cracker as well. This Lucky 7 album is a great collection of rock-accordion music with a real "feel-good" sound reminiscent of some of the classic rock sounds of the 50s as well as a Cajun feel…a folksy, acoustic, yet rock flavor (with a full complement of rock band instruments--guitar, drums, keyboard, bass--but also horns!). Very happy music (some of the songs are also sly & slinky!). It reminds me of being at a summer park under a canopy, having a picnic while listening to great, groovin' music. I love this album!” author: Lyn Gardner

“Some of the best moments on the set are those that key in on The Boss' lesser-known works [like] the alt-country cover of "Valentine's Day," by Lucky 7, a New York based quintet that sounds like they spent plenty of time roaming the heartland.” Kevin O’Hare’s online “Playback” 8-31-03
